The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
