Nearly 25,000 Experiencing Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Storms

Around twenty-five thousand residences in southeastern Queensland were left without power on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms swept through the area, bringing wind gusts hitting 109km/h.

Massive Ice Stones and Broad Damage

Homeowners witnessed giant hailstones measuring up to 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities verified that various areas across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing electricity service throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

At the same time, nearly 1,000 residents in Victoria also experienced energy failures after the metropolitan area recorded its most precipitation in over 500 days.

Emergency response teams handled over five hundred calls for help across the area, mainly for structural issues but also for fallen timber and flooding.

  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple assistance requests
  • Wyndham area - 179 emergency requests

At one point on the previous day, over twenty-eight thousand power users in Victoria were without power.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this coming days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

Tuesday was forecast to be the most rainy day, with continued thunderstorm potential expected across various areas of both areas.

Safety Concern

Medical authorities warned that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the current weather patterns.

This warning comes after previous incidents where analogous circumstances led to significant health impacts in the state.
